Best Laser Level for Patio Builds.

Why you want a laser levelled patio.

Patios are usually level. And when building a patio, you will want to ensure it is level. A level patio means that your patio table and chairs will not rock and when you are sitting down enjoying life and relaxing. No-one wants a table that tips from side to side when you pick up your drink. And you do not want to feel like you are going to fall off your chair.

This laser level guide should help you choose the right laser level for building your patio square and level. If that is what you want. But it will also give you some guidance if you want something fancier or with a slope.

What criteria does the laser level need to have for your patio?

When building a patio there are a few things you need to ensure that you get the patio built right. Patios are usually built level, so you will need to be able to accurately level across the entire patio. Patio slabs are nearly always square in shape, being able to know a right angle is paramount, so that the patio can be square to building or another feature.

The minimum tasks that you want the laser level to perform is

  • To provide a level (horizontal) line.
  • To provide 90degree angle (vertical) lines.

These two requirements should enable most patios to be constructed perfectly. If you have other requirements for your patio then you will need to add to the list above in selecting your laser level.

Consider what you are going to be using your patio for.

You may have several requirements for your new patio. And this will determine whether it needs to be level. For example, I have just had an inflatable hot tub, and this requires a level patio. For a hot tub you not only need a level patio, but it also needs to be strong. I would suggest screeding out a sharp sand base, laying the slabs and then filling the gaps with a very fine sand. Some hot tubs will weigh over 1000kg when filled with water.

Watch the video below for a demonstration on how to do screeding. This is for block paving, but your blocks would be slabs.

Which laser levels would I recommend?

I usually use high end rotating laser levels on large construction sites, like the Leica Rugby 620 or the Topcon RL-H5A. But these are overkill for laying a patio. But I would not recommend lasers within a spirit level as these will be tricky to use for laying a patio.

For laying patios, I would like a laser level that I can sit on the ground, close to my work area. I would also want it to project laser level lines (not dots) so that I can check the level at several points without moving the laser level.

I would also want it to be self-levelling. This means that I can set the laser level unit on the ground and the laser beam projected is level, without me having to adjust it. Most laser levels do this but be careful as some do not.

Cheapest laser level for patio laying.

If you can not afford either of the above two laser levels then your cheapest option will be the Bosch Quigo Line Laser. The Bosch Quigo laser level only has a range of 10m. This is the shortest of the lot. The accuracy is not great either at 8mm at 10m from the Quico unit. It does have a useful clamp included with the kit.

The Bosch Quigo is a self-levelling laser level. Just set it up within 4degrees of horizontal  and the laser will level itself. The Bosch Quigo may well be easier and more accurate to use than a traditional spirit level.
